The Sokoto Town Hall Meeting
The engagement and enlightenment dialogue campaign program were held at Steady Plaza, Abdullahi Fodio Road Sokoto on 16th December 2017. Different categories of taxpayers were in attendance and discussion on ways forward for taxes was held extensively. In attendance were the Zonal Head Corporate Affairs Commission, Chairman Car Dealer’s Association, Chairman Petroleum Marketers Association, Civil Society Organizations, market associations among others. The program was coordinated by a followtaxes Sokoto volunteers and it was implemented based on the existing guidelines of the project.
An extensive discussions, were held and questions were asked and answers were entertained from the taxpayers and the members of the panel who include the representatives of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Federal Enlightenment and Engagement Team, Resident head, Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) Sokoto, the Sokoto of head of Federal Inland Revenue Service Federal Enlighten and Engagement Team (FEET), the commission Sokoto Stamp duties, the chairman of the Petroleum Marketers Association and the co-founder of FollowTaxes. Each of the discussants was given 10 minutes to highlight their activities, success, and challenges. And to share best ways they feel better results towards fiscal transparency will be improved. At the end of the programs a communique was developed and ready to be served to different tiers of government in other to improve on transparency on government spendings and general governance. The Head of Corporate Affairs Commission Sokoto, Hajiya Hafsat Dange, was further invited to the podium to discuss the importance why women should be involved in entrepreneurship. She told the audience her story and how she grew to her position as a young woman under 35. She shared her experience as a Mandela Washington Fellow and spoke extensively on theexisting platforms in her office that is targeted towards the ease of doing business in Nigeria. After her discussions, the floor opened for general questioning and answers.
Resolutions and Communique
After series of discussions and debates, for more than three hours, the meeting came to an end around 2pm. The communique ground read out the agreed resolutions and the attendants agreed to it. Attached as Annex 5 is the communique for the Sokoto community town hall meeting. The Chairman Petroleum dealers association added that he want FollowTaxes to assure him they will follow up on the resolutions. The co-founder FollowTaxes assured him the communique will be forwarded to the governor and there will be a follow up to enhance effects.
